The unexpected cake

A lovely birthday

Today I was genuinely caught by surprise at work.

It’s quite a hard time at my work. If you know where I work you will understand this. Today was busy. Hectic, crazy, busy. Busy where you don’t have time for lunch, or where you eat something quickly in a meeting but then don’t remember that you actually ate five minutes later.

I was completely and utterly focussed on work. There was a meeting at 2pm. I was running late, maybe about ten minutes. Someone came around to my office to see if I was coming. “I’m coming!” I said, a bit too impatiently. “Hang on, I’ve just got to get the handouts I’ve sent to the printer.”

Rush around the corner and into the place where the meeting is.

Cake.

Four excellent and kind colleagues. Hand-written (with excellent, architect handwriting) “Happy birthday Kate” sign on the cake. Chocolate brownie cake. Not huge fuss, but kindness. A brief moment of sitting and talking.

Am super-impressed that people remembered. Having a birthday that generally falls on a long weekend means I rarely have a work day birthday. No exception this year either, my birthday is tomorrow.

Did I mention the cake? I may have had three pieces. Yum.

A totally WICKED start

A lovely birthday

Greg and I took two of our nieces to see the musical Wicked on the weekend. All four of us have birthdays across May and June so it was kind of a birthday extravaganza that ended in a slumber party at our house (with an additional niece coming for the sleep-over). It was great!

I’ve seen Wicked  before, with my sister-in-law in London many years ago, but the others had not seen it. Niece-the-younger observed that parts of it were very loud (it was), but that the costumes and dancing were cool. We talked about how it was a backstory for the Wizard of Oz (which they had both seen). We talk about difference and how to deal with it. Niece-the-elder was very thoughtful in her responses. We observed people. We saw bridal photos being posed for in the street. We caught the train.

We made pizzas, we danced and sang songs (including Defying Gravity and Popular from Wicked). We negotiated over who got to sleep where (not that much sleep was really had). We had pancakes for breakfast. They were loud! Especially niece-the-youngest, in a really joyous way. We were all in need of nana-naps by Sunday afternoon…
